CBD and pets – What you should know

You know about CBD and its uses for us, but what about our pets?

CBD and pets, what you should know(image)

You may have thought you heard it all in regard to CBD, but there have been growing queries around the use of CBD with pets – in particular cats and dogs. Many believe that CBD has positive effects on our wellness, but what about that of our furry companions? Let’s take a look at what you should know about CBD usage with pets.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD for short, is one of the chemical compounds found in both the hemp and marijuana plant.

This compound works in conjunction with the endocannabinoid systems (ECS) that create very similar chemicals already in our body, including cats and dogs.

Difference between hemp & marijuana

Both are varieties from the cannabis plant and contain CBD. The main difference between the two is that hemp has less than 0.2% of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psycho-active compound that is responsible for the intoxicating effects associated with cannabis. Marijuana has a greater percent of THC, hence the effects associated with it.

Can my pet get high from CBD?

As CBD is non-addictive and non-psychoactive, it cannot get you or your pets high. There are recommended dosages for humans (no more than 70mg a day) however as the FDA has not approved CBD usage for animals they recommend you talk to your veterinarian about appropriate usage.

Is it safe for dogs and cats?

There is still more research to be done on this topic, with only a few studies that have looked into CBD use with pets. As of this time the FDA have not yet approved CBD for use in animals and so cannot ensure safety or effectiveness of any CBD that you give to your pet. It is advised to speak with your veterinarian beforehand and do your own research before giving your pets CBD.

Why are people giving their pets CBD?

CBD for pets is still under investigation in the veterinary space so the verdict on the benefits for your pets is still out. There has been anecdotal evidence from pet owners who have given their pets CBD and noticed improvements within their dog or cat.

What CBD is best for cats and dogs?

There are a variety of ways for you to introduce CBD into your pet’s diet, and there are many brands to choose from including us here at Cali Greens. Most certainly though you should make sure of several factors before purchasing any CBD. Make sure the buyer is a reputable store that only sell quality CBD that contains no THC.

Products made with CBD Isolate are ideal as it is the purest form of CBD and is made by removing everything bar CBD from the hemp plant. Products containing more than 0.2% THC are illegal in the UK – CBD can naturally have 0.2% of THC that does not provide the effects of taking THC.

What are the possible side effects?

Much like with us, dogs and cats could also potentially feel side effects from CBD. If you give your pet CBD, make sure to look out for:
•  Dry mouth – this can manifest in cats and dogs as an increased thirst.
•  Low blood pressure – if your pet seems unbalanced, lethargic, fainting or similar, they could be experiencing this side effect.
•  Drowsiness – if your dog or cat seems to be struggling to stay awake whilst doing normal activities or playing, this could be a side effect of the CBD.

Talk to your Veterinarian

It’s our responsibility to look after our pets especially when their health and safety is involved. For that matter, before giving your cat or dog CBD it’s best to do as much research on the topic as possible and to also speak to the professionals.

As CBD hasn’t been recognised by the FDA for pets yet, many veterinarians may be hesitant to discuss CBD for pets. Instead, you could discuss with your veterinarian the research you have conducted to start up the conversation on the topic.
