CBD is one of the active compounds naturally found in the cannabis plant. Being non-psychoactive, CBD products such as Cali Greens are completely legal in the UK, whilst marijuana remains illegal. You might be wondering where the cannabis used to produce our CBD comes from. Read on to discover where cannabis and hemp are grown.

What’s the difference between hemp and cannabis?

To better understand where cannabis and hemp are grown, it’s essential to understand how they differ. Hemp is actually part of the cannabis family. It’s as much cannabis as marijuana is, except it contains less THC than other cannabis plants. Hemp is defined as a cannabis plant containing 0.3% THC or less. THC is tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound that gets you high – less than 0.3% is not considered enough to give that effect. Marijuana, on the other hand, contains more than 0.3% THC.

Unlike marijuana, it’s legal to grow hemp in the UK, although the authorisation comes with a lot of restrictions and expensive licenses. That’s why the cannabis – usually hemp – used in CBD production is grown in countries where the legal environment is more beneficial to cannabis farming.

Where is cannabis grown?

Hemp is grown legally in many countries all over the world. According to a 2019 study by World’s Top Exports on cannabis oil exports, the main countries exporting it are China, India and the United States. CBD production will usually take place where the cannabis is grown, before being shipped as a transformed product in order to respect the legislation in different countries.

What’s the best environment to grow hemp?

Hemp is a resourceful plant. It thrives in warm weather, ideally around 19-25°C, but can resist low temperatures down to about -5°C. However, frost will prevent hemp from continuing its growth, so hemp farmers usually protect it when the weather gets colder. When it comes to humidity, the hemp plant needs 50 to 80 cm of rain during its growing season, which can usually be ensured with modern farming irrigation systems. That makes hemp a relatively easy plant to grow in a variety of climates.

Where is hemp grown sustainably?

The cannabis industry is not immune to unsustainable farming practices. That’s why it’s important to read product labels and learn more about where the hemp used in your CBD is grown. Look out for CBD products sourced from sustainably grown hemp.
