World Kindness Day is fast approaching, and we wanted to help share some kindness with you. Even the smallest act of kindness can brighten someone’s day, especially when times are hard. We’ve put together a few ways that you can be kind to yourself by keeping positive, and how you can share the kindness.
What is World Kindness Day?
It happens every 13th November, World Kindness Day is celebrated in the UK, Canada, Australia, and more, as a way to remind everyone to share some kindness. Established in 1998, the World Kindness Movement (a global coalition of kindness NGOs), have been working hard to make kindness the norm. Although it may not be a day of great fanfare, World Kindness Day is one we like to revisit each year as a reminder for the positive things.
5 things to help you remain positive
Being kind to yourself is one way you can help yourself be kind to others. It can be hard to reflect kindness to others in troubling times which is why we have some tips to help you remain positive.
1. Treat yourself
Self-care is a priority, one we can often overlook, but making sure to do what you love is important. Take part in your hobbies, get plenty of sleep, arrange for days out, it differs for everyone but as long as it’s something that makes you smile or feel better, then it’s worth it.
2. Keep an open mind and perspective
When things get hard it can be easy to focus on the negatives. Instead keep an open mind about your situation or simply shift your perspective to make that negative, a positive. It can take some practice but doing so could set you on an unexpected path of self-improvement,
3. Surround yourself with loved ones
Friends and family can be just the people you need when you’re feeling down. Reaching out to them for support or to spend time together can be enough to keep your chin up.
4. Allow yourself to have bad days
Forcing positivity can backfire over time as it bottles up unwanted emotions you may be repressing. Let yourself have some bad days, there’s nothing wrong with deciding against social events and letting out your tears when needed.
5. Spend time in nature
One of the most important things we’ve forgotten for fostering good mental health and positivity, is nature. Lives have naturally grown more hectic and switched-on with the presence of technology. Sometimes all you need is a reset. Unplug from technology and take a walk outside and you’ll notice your mood improve.

By making an effort to do some of these small acts of kindness, you are more likely to revisit them unconsciously. Here are just a few you can try for yourself but there are tons of great acts of kindness ideas you can try from the Random Acts of Kindness foundation.
1. Send a positive message to a loved one – some positive affirmation or just a note to say hi can mean a lot to someone!
2. Be kind to your server – whether it’s at a coffee shop, the person behind the till at the shop or the server at a restaurant, gratitude and understanding go a long way.
3. Step out of your comfort zone if it will make someone smile – and many times stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to an enjoyable experience you may never have had before.
4. Compliment others – perhaps you think the person at the bus stop is wearing a coat you love, or their hair looks amazing, dishing out compliments can be a simple but very effective way to brighten someone’s day.
5. Connect with a family member or friend you haven’t spoken to in a while – reaching out to those you haven’t spoken to for some time not only is likely to make them feel happy, but yourself too!
