You can’t look after your wellness without also looking after your skin. Feeling great in your skin does wonders for your health and mental wellbeing. When your skin is tired, irritated or dry, it’s easy for it to put a downer on everything else you do.

In the UK on average, 89% of women buy skincare products, spending a total of around £154 up to £337 per year on skincare. So the chances are you probably are already aware of how to treat and maintain your lovely skin. You may already have a skincare routine that’s perhaps not working quite right for you, or like many others, have decided to start looking after your skin more.

It’s never too early or too late to look after your skin so let’s get started.

Identify your skin type

The first step is making sure you know what your skin type is. Many of the decisions on products will be decided by the type of skin and the problems you have. There are five skin types which include: dry, oily, normal, combination and sensitive. Each have their own quirks, problems they cause and ways to help treat them. There are a few ways you can decide which you have, the simplest being the wash test. After washing your face with a mild cleanser, examine your face 30 minutes later.

If you notice your skin looks shiny throughout, then you likely have oily skin.
If your face feels tight and is flaky or scaley, you likely have dry skin.
If you have a shine only in your T-Zone (forehead, nose, chin), you probably have combination skin.
If your skin feels hydrated and comfortable but not oily, then you likely have normal skin.
Those with sensitive skin will become obvious due to your skin being more reddened and irritated. You can have this skin type in tandem with the other types but it means your skin is more sensitive to certain triggers which means you may need to avoid certain products.

Your Skincare Routine Roadmap

It really is quite simple how we look after our skin. Keep it looking and feeling clean and healthy, preventing damage to our skin from those pesky UV rays, repairing any existing damage and minimizing irritation. Simply put; clean, protect, repair. To do this there are 4-5 steps you should do every morning and every evening. Make sure when buying your products for each step, you take note of what works for best for your skin type!

Here’s a summary of your morning routine:

Cleanser

This is your bread-and-butter for skincare. Cleansing helps clean our skin removing any build up dirt, makeup, oils, dead skin cells and more. It’s essentially creating the blank canvas that we will work with. There’s no optimum frequency or time to cleanse but generally once in the morning and evening is ideal. If you workout, cleansing after a sweaty session is certainly a boost. Just make certain to pay attention to your skin when cleansing as doing too much can lead to skin irritation.

To use your cleanser follow the instructions of your product as they can sometimes vary. But generally after applying the product and rinsing, pat your skin dry with a towel.

Toner (optional)

We say this is optional as many women skip the step without issue. Toners are mainly used as a primer for your skin allowing it to absorb the rest of your skincare products better. They provide extra nutrients and can help replenish your skin after cleansing.

You should apply toner to your dry face after you have cleansed. Again instructions may vary depending on your product but generally soak a cotton ball or pad with the toner (damp not soaking wet), and gently spread across your face and neck. Be careful to avoid the eye area and lips!

Serum

These are the extra mile for skincare but one you’ll notice if you begin using. Serums penetrate deeper into the skin layers which delivers those powerful natural ingredients where it needs to go to provide those beautifying benefits. Serums are often great for treating specific skin concerns like tired & dull skin, signs of aging etc.

Like other products, the instructions can vary but typically they are used after toners and before moisturisers. These can typically be used by applying a small amount to your fingers and patting it on and smoothing out to ensure full face coverage. It should absorb nicely into the skin after a short while, if not you may have used a little too much.

Moisturiser

The most essential part of any skincare routine, it’s possibly the most important step for our skin which is why the majority of women will use at least a moisturiser daily. As it says in the name, moisturisers are purposely made to help hydrate our skin and help leave it feeling soft to the touch. Some nowadays even come with SPF built in for added sun protection.

Moisturiser should be applied as your last step before makeup, just make sure that your skin has absorbed it first before applying makeup. If you are not using a serum or toner then apply moisturiser after cleansing.

Apply a small amount to your fingers and dab in key areas around your face. Rub in small circles until it is fully absorbed into your skin. If it takes a long time to absorb or doesn’t do so fully, then you may have used too much or your skin could benefit from using toner first.

SPF

As mentioned many moisturisers come with SPF in them now but many also do not. If yours doesn’t then finishing up your routine before you leave on a morning, with a quick addition of SPF protection is a must. You don’t want to waste your morning’s prep work on your skin, to ruin it with those harsh sun rays.

How about your evening skincare routine?

On an evening you want to repeat the above steps before bed with the only exception being that after using your serum, use a face mask. There are tons available in the market now from full-on face masks to targeting clay masks and more. This extra step feels like a nice little pamper before bed and can give you those last ten minutes to wrap up your day whilst waiting for the mask to do its magic. Once you’ve rinsed off your mask simply add some night moisturiser to finish the day. Evening moisturiser is different from day cream as it is often a heavier texture for a deeper moisturising benefit. They can also include an ingredient called Retinol which is great for helping skin cell regenerate but doesn’t react well when exposed to the sun. So make sure not to get your day and night creams mixed up.

How CBD can help your skin

A relatively new ingredient in the skincare department, CBD is yet another natural ingredient that skincare routines can benefit from. CBD is packed with antioxidants and has been shown to have moisturising effects on skin. Due to its fine molecular structure, CBD works even better when combined with other moisturising ingredients as it can help them penetrate the skin deeper for longer-lasting moisture. This is why CBD balms, butters and lotions are some of the most common CBD skincare products available.

We cannot claim that CBD can be used for any medical reasons or to treat medical issues but can be used daily for regular skincare. As our skin naturally contains cannabinoid receptors, giving your skin the vitamins and moisture it needs, help it flourish. And better yet, it’s perfect for all skin types.

Make sure that if you are starting a new skincare routine that you have patience and motivation. As brilliant as skincare products are, they don’t often have strong noticeable affects for at least a few days to a few weeks. You also need to make sure to listen to your skin, if any of your chosen products cause irritation then cease using and consult a doctor. It could be that your skin is sensitive or that you are even allergic to one of the ingredients. Keep a journal to document your skincare and follow the journey your skin takes to a brighter day.
